Most Repair Shops Score Below 50% on Technician Hiring Readiness, New Diagnostic from AAPEX 2026 Session Reveals

OCEANSIDE, Calif., Oct. 13, 2026
Technician Find founder Chris Lawson will present a ten-question diagnostic that scores a shop’s hiring process from 0 to 10 — most shops score between three and five — as the U.S. faces a shortfall of 241,842 technicians per year through 2029 (2026 TechForce Foundation).
OCEANSIDE, Calif., Oct. 13, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Most independent repair shops lose qualified technician candidates not because no one is available, but because their recruiting process has three to seven fixable gaps, according to automotive and diesel technician recruiting specialist Technician Find. Founder Christopher T. “Chris” Lawson will present a 45-minute session at AAPEX 2026 on Tuesday, November 3, in Las Vegas, giving every attendee a diagnostic scorecard and a 90-day plan to close those gaps.
The session is built around the Ten Questions Hiring Scorecard, a printed 5×7 diagnostic that every attendee takes home. Each question maps to one step in the 90-day plan. In field testing, most shops scored between three and five out of ten, meaning more than half their recruiting process is leaking candidates to competing shops with stronger hiring fundamentals. A digital version is available at technicianfind.com/score.
Across all ten technician sectors, the U.S. needs 241,842 new technicians annually, but training programs graduate only 101,743 per year, and after accounting for turnover, the economy nets just 32,450 workers against that demand (2026 TechForce Foundation Technician Supply, Demand & Opportunity Report). For an independent shop owner with an empty lift, those numbers mean every qualified candidate who applies is also being recruited by the shop down the road. The scorecard is designed to help individual shops win that competition.
The session diagnoses three reasons shops lose candidates: the job offer isn’t compelling enough, the ad never reaches the right technicians, or the shop drops the ball on follow-up after a technician applies. In one interactive exercise, attendees pull out their phones and apply to their own shops, experiencing the same friction a candidate encounters.
The scorecard’s final question asks whether the owner maintains a relationship with at least five technicians who could fill the next opening, so the next hire doesn’t start from a cold search.
“You are not hiring a technician. You are selling a job to a tech who already has one,” said Lawson. “Most owners I work with have no idea where they’re losing candidates until they see their score. It’s almost always the same three or four questions.”
Lawson is a returning AAPEX education presenter who delivered a session at Joe’s Garage during AAPEX 2024. He field-tested the current scorecard session at an independent shop open house in September 2026 and is featured in Chapter 5 of Beyond the Bays by Hunt Demarest (2026) on technician recruiting for independent shops.
